2019SP JOURN 4992/JOURN 7992 McKean - Reporting, Editing and Marketing of Converged Media
Welcome to Journalism 4992, the capstone course for undergraduates in convergence-related interest areas.
You and your colleagues will bring together the reporting, editing, management, design, analytics, social media and marketing skills gained in previous Convergence courses as well as your individual interest areas to plan, produce, promote and evaluate in-depth, highly-creative journalistic content and products. Unlike Convergence Reporting and Convergence Editing & Producing, your work in this course will take a longer view. You'll spend the entire semester working on a single project. High levels of critical thinking and professional presentation skills are expected. Class discussions will focus on your projects, the latest developments in digital media and current ethical/political debates in journalism, especially those influenced by changes in the media landscape. You will also polish your online portfolio as a tool for personal branding and a repository for your best work.
HERE ARE YOUR TEAM PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS.
And here is a traditional, week-by-week schedule for the class.
The class meets on Mondays from 3:00 to 4:50 p.m. in the RJI Board Room, 310B RJI. If you haven't been there before, take the RJI elevator to the third floor, go through the double glass doors and all the way back to the southwest corner. The conference room has a long glass wall.
Note: Because of larger-than-normal enrollment this semester, I have divided the class into two sections. The first meets from 3-3:50. The second meets from 4-4:50. While not required, the hour you are not assigned to class would be a great time for your team to schedule a weekly meeting.
Section 1: Kansas City Star, Disaster in a Box (AP), 360 video, Startup podcast and Danny Stewart
Section 2: AdZou, Hyper-local investigative, Producing Post, Show Me the State and State government audio
I look forward to working with you this semester.
Mike
