Course Syllabus
Course Description:
English 1000 both prepares students for and engages them in new writing and rhetorical situations, especially those they will encounter in academic and public contexts. At its core, English 1000 offers students instruction and practice in inquiry, writing as a process, thinking rhetorically, using sources, and giving and receiving feedback. Students learn to ask questions about complex issues, to find ways of investigating those questions, and to shape their findings for a variety of purposes and audiences. Students will also practice different ways of approaching writing projects, including ways of gathering and evaluating sources, taking notes and finding patterns, and producing texts that meet different rhetorical goals.

Attendance: If you know you’ll miss class on the day an assignment is due, be sure to make prior arrangements and expect to submit the assignment before it is due. If you are unable to give notification ahead of time and find that you can’t attend class, consult the CANVAS site and course materials.

Out-of-class written assignments must be typed and submitted on time. One letter grade will be deducted for each day an assignment is late. Assignments must be uploaded to CANVAS as Word Documents. Contact the instructor if unforeseen circumstances cause difficulties finishing an assignment before a deadline. Upload each final copy of a paper to CANVAS on the same day a hard copy of that paper is due in class. In-class essays are comparable to in-class tests. If absent during an in-class writing, the student will receive a zero for that assignment.

Limited laptop and phone usage is only permitted in class with permission.

If you use sources (including Internet material), follow current citation rules for documentation. In some instances submitting photocopies of the pages from which you borrowed information might be requested.

During meetings designated as "Peer Review/Writing Workshop," you must bring a complete version of your essay to a class or to a conference. If you do not have a complete draft, based upon assignment specifications, one letter will be deducted from the final copy score. Peer review sessions are only effective when everyone has a strong draft to critique. You will be periodically asked to submit prewriting, drafts, and revisions through email or CANVAS.
